Portugal hosted the World Youth Day months after an independent commission revealed that the country's Catholic clergy have abused nearly 5,000 children since 1950.

Although that weight was present throughout the six-day event, it was announced by the organization that 1.5 million young Catholics were in attendance leaving an atmosphere divided between a 'Catholic Woodstock' and small fragments of a legacy that is impossible to erase.
